Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups
- coarse ground coffee (ground from 2 cups/500 mL whole coffee beans)
- 425 mL
- Tools:
- 8 cups
- glass pitcher (or measuring cup)
- 2 L
- 4-6
- basket-style coffee filters
- fine-mesh strainer
Method
Step 1
Stir ground coffee with 4 cups (1 L) water in pitcher. Refrigerate 6 hr.
Step 2
Line strainer with coffee filter and set over large bowl to catch liquid. Slowly pour cold brew mixture into lined strainer. As coffee filter gets filled with ground coffee and flow-through slows, discard clogged filter and replace with new one. Continue straining process until all cold brew mixture is filtered.
Step 3
Store cold brew concentrate in refrigerator and use within 5 days. To prepare, mix 3 parts cold brew coffee concentrate with 1 part water, cream or milk. Sweeten to taste with choice of sweetener or simple syrup. Add ice.
Step 4
Simple Syrup: In saucepan, stir 1 cup (250 mL) sugar with 1 cup (250 mL) water. Bring to boil over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved, about 2 min. Cool to room temperature. Store in sealed jar in refrigerator. Makes 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) simple syrup.
